The Compleat Food Group
Graduate interview

Constantinos Hadjiconstantis

From Graduate to Operations Excellence Manager

After 14 months’ military service with the National Guard of Cyprus, I moved to the UK to study Economics at the University of Nottingham. Keen to build my operational and analytical expertise, I then completed a Master’s in Supply Chain and Operations Management.

Why I Chose a Graduate Scheme

I chose a graduate scheme because it offered the ideal balance of challenge and support. I could learn from experienced colleagues, build strong relationships and grow in confidence while taking ownership of my development.

Why The Compleat Food Group?

The Compleat Food Group combined everything I was looking for: a fast-moving FMCG environment, ambitious growth plans and a culture aligned with my own drive to succeed. My background as a competitive swimmer has made me naturally determined, and I wanted to start my career in a business that would challenge me, push me beyond my comfort zone and share my ambition to be the best.

No Two Days Are the Same

The variety has been one of the best parts of the Graduate Scheme. In a fast-moving FMCG environment, every day brings new challenges, conversations and opportunities to learn—demanding clear thinking, adaptability and focus.

As an Operational Excellence specialist, I worked much like an internal consultant: identifying opportunities, analysing data, solving problems and partnering with teams to deliver sustainable improvements. The support around me accelerated both my technical capability and my ability to communicate and influence effectively across the business.

Delivering My Biggest Achievement

My proudest achievement was improving performance on an underperforming production line. Combining methods from my Master’s with training and qualifications gained at The Compleat Food Group, I identified and implemented improvements that delivered an annual benefit of approximately just under £1million.

Learning How to Lead

While the scheme strengthened my technical expertise, my greatest growth was as a leader. Three capabilities proved essential:

  • Leadership – inspiring people to turn ideas into improvement.
  • Communication – making complex ideas clear, relevant and engaging.
  • Teamwork – recognising that lasting results are built through collaboration.

No successful business is built by one person; with the right team, you can achieve far more together.

Expanding My Horizons Across the Business

A major highlight was supporting diagnostics across the pastry division. Visiting multiple sites, identifying opportunities and presenting recommendations to senior leaders broadened my understanding of food manufacturing and strengthened my network across the business.

Crucially, it allowed me to share best practice between factories—turning local insight into wider operational improvement.

Preparing Me for My Next Step

The scheme prepared me to progress from OpEx Specialist to OpEx Manager by steadily increasing the scale, complexity and impact of the projects I led. Taking greater ownership sharpened my decision-making, built my confidence and equipped me for the next step.

It gave me the experience, capability and support to move forward with purpose.

My Advice to Future Graduates

My advice is simple: create your own opportunities. If you want greater exposure, responsibility or challenge, speak to people, understand their priorities and find ways to add value.
The Compleat Food Group has given me a safe, supportive environment to take initiative, have open conversations and shape my development. Stay curious—the more you explore, the more opportunities you will find.
