We’re looking for an experienced Commercial Controller to lead and grow our strategic partnership with Sainsbury’s, one of our largest and most important retail customers.

At The Compleat Food Group, our relationship with Sainsbury’s generates around £220m in annual revenue across multiple categories. This role will take ownership of our Continental Meats portfolio, alongside several smaller growth categories, with responsibility for driving commercial performance, strategic growth and customer relationships.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a commercially driven FMCG professional who enjoys building strong customer partnerships, analysing performance data and identifying new opportunities for growth.

The Role

Reporting to the Customer Director – Sainsbury’s, you will manage the day-to-day commercial relationship with the retailer while developing and executing a clear customer strategy to maximise sales and profitability.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams across supply chain, production, NPD, technical and category, acting as a key ambassador for the business with the Sainsbury’s team.

You will also lead and develop a Commercial Manager, ensuring strong delivery across the account.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and deliver the Sainsbury’s commercial strategy for Continental Meats and supporting categories
  • Analyse sales performance and market data to identify growth opportunities and performance drivers
  • Lead the development and delivery of annual joint business plans and promotional strategies
  • Manage commodity pricing and open-book costing models where relevant
  • Work cross-functionally to ensure alignment across commercial, NPD, supply chain and production
  • Build strong working relationships with Sainsbury’s buyers and cross-functional teams
  • Identify and deliver new product development opportunities with the customer
  • Take ownership of the customer P&L and budget delivery

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who combines strong commercial acumen with excellent relationship-building skills.

You will likely have:

  • Experience managing major UK grocery retailers (ideally Sainsbury’s)
  • A strong understanding of own-label and branded FMCG environments
  • Excellent analytical and financial skills, with the ability to interpret and act on market data
  • Experience delivering commercial strategy and joint business plans
  • A proven ability to build strong customer partnerships at buyer level
  • Strong stakeholder management across internal teams
  • A genuine passion for food and the FMCG industry

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within chilled or short shelf-life categories
  • Exposure to category management or operations
  • Experience delivering collaborative NPD with retail customers
  • Previous Sainsbury’s account experience
